Where am I?

On this website we make use of OpenStreetMap as it is a freely available and widely used mapping tool – our maps are generated from OSM data. Its maps are available on its website www.openstreetmap.org and via various phone apps. With them, you can find the GPS coordinates of a point on a map. It’s also possible to generate a link to map of Oakley Wood which includes a pointer to a particular spot, and use this to send to someone.

How you use the OSM website will depend on whether you are using a mobile phone (or tablet) or a computer.

On a phone:

  1. Open the map of Oakley Wood
  2. Expand the map, and touch and hold the spot you want to mark until a menu appears. Tap “Centre the map here” (last item)
  3. Tap on the Share symbol on the right of the screen (looks like a box with an arrow pointing up & right)
  4. Tap “Include marker”, then “Short Link”.
  5. Touch and hold the link information, and tap “Copy” on the list of options that appears.

On a computer you can move the map around under the pointer to get a more accurate position:

  1. Open the map of Oakley Wood
  2. Expand the map as necessary
  3. Click the Share symbol on the right of the screen (looks like a box with an arrow pointing up & right)
  4. Click “Include marker”. A marker will appear on the map. You can grab the map (left mouse button) and move it around under the map until the marker is in the right position
  5. Click “Short Link” and copy the link from the box underneath

You can now paste the link into whatever you like – email, social media, etc.

Alternatively, you can use a mapping app that uses OSM data. Here we are using Cruiser:

  1. Navigate to the map of Oakley Wood
  2. Tap and hold on the spot you want to reference
  3. A menu pops up showing the coordinates.
  4. This may be all you need. However, you can Tap “More…” for further options such as copy (to clipboard), share (via email, WhatsApp, etc).

Cruiser can use online or offline maps.
