DESCRIPTION:For December’s practical task day we’ll be clearing along some of the woodland boundaries in preparation for hedgerow planting. \nImproving the edge of the wood is a vital part of the management plan. The edges of a woodland are its most important habitat. A greater number of species inhabit the first 10 metres of any woodland edge or ride edge than inhabit the remainder of the woodland. DESCRIPTION:We kick off this year’s winter programme of practical tasks with some coppicing and woodland ride management. Coppicing is a traditional woodland management technique that produces a continuous supply of small diameter timber for things like fencing stakes\, hurdle making and firewood. David is the author of a book on Warwickshire moths and serves as the moth conservation officer for Butterfly Conservation Warwickshire. It also burns up calories but is a lot more fun than going to the gym! \nMeet in the Crematorium car park at 10:30.
